Description:Under the direction of designated staff, provides basic care to patients in the outpatient clinic in accordance with established procedures and nursing practice. Alters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of the patient being served (pediatric, adolescent, and adult.) Performs all functions in a manner that ensures policies and procedures are followed.
Duties:
  • Interacts with all internal and external customers in a caring and respectful manner in accordance with our Core Values philosophy.
  • Performs all procedures in a manner specific to the age and developmental stage of the patient being served.
  • Obtains and records appropriate information from the patient for the medical record
  • Obtains and records blood pressure, height, weight, pulse, respiration, occipital frontal circumference (ofc) and temperature for patients at time of check-in as appropriate.
  • Plots growth information.
  • Prepares room and patients for examination and assists during the examination as requested.
  • Prepares and administers medications per written order by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant and follows the five rights of administering medications
  • Authorizes drug refills per written order and telephones prescriptions to a pharmacy as appropriate.
  • Assists/administers tests and procedures.
  • Performs phlebotomy.
  • Performs routine quality control monitoring and maintains appropriate records.
  • Reports quality control failures to supervisor.
  • Fills out appropriate information on lab requisitions.
  • Handles specimens appropriately per clinical procedures.
  • Charts accurately, concisely, descriptively, and legibly in a timely manner.
  • Communicates clearly and appropriately with other office staff.
  • Maintains clinic flow
  • Assembles and maintains patient charts.
  • Calls patients back for repeat lab work when needed.
  • Stocks room daily.
  • Cleans rooms after each patient examination.
  • Keeps clinic area clean and orderly
  • Disposes of bio-hazardous material appropriately.
  • Adheres to company policies, procedures, and standards while consistently demonstrating a professional and positive image.
  • Keeps site management informed of unusual circumstances, patient needs, and problems in the clinic.
  • Photocopies/faxes documents as appropriate.
  • Adheres to State and Federal safety guidelines.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines.
  • Reviews and completes Medicare waiver form prior to administering a test or procedure when appropriate.
  • Assists in scheduling of appointments and verifies appointment information for patients.
  • Orders and stocks supplies as appropriate. Maintains inventory as appropriate.
  • Assists with front office functions as assigned
  • Assists in Medical Records with entering, storing and retrieving information from the medical record
  • Participates in orientation/instruction of Medical Assistants and Medical Assistant Externs as requested by director/manager/coordinator.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life-span; demonstrates the ability to assess patients’ age-specific needs; demonstrates ability to interpret data relative to the patient’s age and developmental stage.
  • Knowledge of various standard lab and medical procedures
  • Knowledge and familiarity with designated equipment and supplies
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of ICD-9/CPT coding
  • Knowledge of health care insurances
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude
  • Ability to recognize an emergent situation and seek appropriate assistance.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish good rapport with patients and health team members.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written orders and to request direction/assistance when needed.
  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to stand and/or walk for extensive periods of time.
  • Ability to perform manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for easy and skillful use of hands when working with patients and/or equipment.

  • Ability to treat all internal and external customers with dignity and respect.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to potentially dangerous/infectious material and situations that require following safety precautions including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Graduation from an accredited education program for the medical assistant
  • 6 months clinical experience preferred
  • Adult and pediatric phlebotomy, EKGs experience preferred (may be acquired through on the job training.)
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross) helpful
  • Current T. B. certification (Indiana State Department of Health) is required (or must be obtained prior to administering/reading PPD’s).

    Must be able to type at least 30 awpm. NOTE: Must successfully complete the IUMG- PC basic drug calculation examination during the interview process.
